Ysgafell Wen

The walk up Ysgafell Wen from Blaenau Ffestiniog is short and sharp - think 45 minutes to the summit if you're moving at pace, longer if you're taking photos. The peak itself sits at 610 metres, which doesn't sound like much until you clock the views across Snowdonia spreading out beneath you. You get proper 360-degree vistas here: the Moelwyns to one side, the slate quarries of Blaenau dropping away like grey scars, and on a clear day the ridge walks toward Cader Idris becoming seriously tempting.

It's a walker's hill rather than a sightseeing attraction with facilities. Bring decent boots - the path gets boggy and loose underfoot - and allow an extra half hour if you're with kids or anyone who prefers a steady pace. Summer's best, though winter clears the cloud cover that can roll in fast.

Why bother when there's bigger mountains nearby? Because it's accessible without being trivial, and the crowds thin out quickly once you leave Snowdon's orbit. Families staying at Llyn Gwynant Campsite or Bryn Dinas Camping Pods are practically on the doorstep - you could bag this summit before breakfast and still have the afternoon free. Solo walkers and couples after a proper hill without the tourist infrastructure will rate it highly. The Blaenau Ffestiniog slate heritage adds local context if you're interested in industrial history, though the mountain itself cares nothing for that.
