Asker Hill

The walk up Asker Hill from Keighley is steep but manageable, and it rewards you with proper views across the Worth Valley. You're looking at moorland and rolling Pennine country - the kind of landscape that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place.

It's not a long walk. Most people bag it in under an hour return, which means it works brilliantly if you're based at Brown Bank Caravan Park just down the road or any of the other sites within spitting distance of Keighley. Families with kids who are past the "carry me" stage will get on fine with it. The path is straightforward enough, though it can be muddy after rain, so decent boots help.

Asker Hill itself isn't particularly famous or crowded. That's partly the point. You won't find gift shops or visitor centres here - it's just a bit of high ground with a view. The moorland around it changes with the seasons, so spring when the gorse comes out is particularly good. Winter can be bleak and grey, which some people find atmospheric and others find depressing.

If you're already exploring the Worth Valley - there's proper Brontë territory nearby and Bolton Abbey Estate is within reach - this fits neatly into a half-day's walking. Go early if the weather looks uncertain; these hills clear fast when cloud rolls in. Free to visit, naturally. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take your time and actually sit down at the top rather than just ticking a box.
