Brook's Hill

The walk up Brook's Hill, just outside Keighley, is a proper leg-stretcher if you're after something with a bit of bite. It's not high by Pennine standards - you're talking a modest peak rather than a serious mountaineering job - but the climb is steep enough to keep things interesting. From the top, you get proper views across North Yorkshire moorland, the kind that reward the effort without leaving you completely knackered.

It's the sort of walk that suits anyone who fancies a couple of hours in the fresh air without needing a full day's commitment. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the gradient a slog. The trails are reasonably well-marked, though nothing fancy. Allow two to three hours depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit.

Based near Keighley, you're well-positioned for a wider walking holiday. Brown Bank Caravan Park sits closest at under a mile away, which is handy if you're touring the area. Olicana Park and Draughton Heights Campsite are equally close, giving you real flexibility. The Wharfe Valley has plenty of other walks - you could string several together over a few days and barely scratch the surface.

Go on a clear day, ideally autumn or spring when the light's best and you're not fighting midges. The moorland can get bleak and featureless in poor visibility, so timing matters. It's free, naturally - just park sensibly near the trailhead and crack on.
