Counter Hill Ironage camp

Walking the moorland around Keighley, you'll stumble across the earthworks of Counter Hill - an Iron Age settlement that's been quietly decaying into the Yorkshire landscape for nearly three thousand years. There's not much left to photograph, to be honest. What you get is a series of low banks and ditches that formed the defensive perimeter of a fort, spread across the hilltop like a faded blueprint. Your imagination has to do most of the heavy lifting here.

It's the kind of place that appeals to serious archaeology types and walkers with time on their hands rather than families wanting instant gratification. The site itself costs nothing - it's open moorland - and you can wander it freely. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you just want to tick the box. The nearest town is Keighley, which sits about a mile or so down the slope.

If you're based at one of the local campsites - Draughton Heights or Olicana Park are both close by - this makes a logical addition to a moorland ramble. It won't blow your mind as a standalone trip, but paired with a decent walk across the hills it becomes part of something bigger. The views from up there are proper good, especially toward Bolton Abbey way. Don't expect information boards or facilities. Just bring the OS map, wear decent boots, and treat it as an excuse to get away from the carpark for a bit.
