You'll find proper interpretive displays covering everything from puffins and sea eagles to the medieval monasteries and Viking settlements. It's not a sprawling museum, so you can work through it in 90 minutes without feeling rushed. The real draw, though, is that it actually gives context to the islands you're about to visit - or have just come back from. Knowing a bit about basalt geology or the Iona pilgrimage route makes those ferry trips feel less like tourist box-ticking and more like genuine exploration.

Families with older kids and anyone with a genuine interest in Scottish islands will get proper value from it. Younger children might find it a touch dry unless they're already keen on wildlife. The location itself is the best bit - you can grab a coffee and watch the ferries heading out to Mull while you're thinking about where to explore next.
