Auchindrain

You'll find yourself walking through what amounts to a genuine working township from the 1700s and 1800s - not a recreation, but actual dwellings and farm buildings that locals once called home. Auchindrain, just outside Cairndow in Argyll, is exactly what it says: a museum village that shows how folk really lived in the Scottish Highlands before everything changed.

The buildings are spread across the landscape naturally, which means you're doing a proper walk rather than shuffling through a visitor centre. There's a thatched cottage you can go inside, a smithy, a mill, and various stone structures all explained with straightforward signage that doesn't patronise. It takes a good two to three hours to do it justice, though you can skip through faster if time's tight.

History enthusiasts will find this absolutely absorbing - the detail on subsistence farming, communal living, and how the Clearances changed everything is genuinely informative. Families with older kids do well here too, though younger ones might fidget after an hour. It's less theme park, more archive with walls around it.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Argyll Caravan Park or Stucreoch are closest at three miles - this pairs nicely with exploring Loch Fyne and the surrounding glens. The wind can be fierce, so dress properly. Worth allowing a morning or afternoon in your itinerary rather than treating it as a quick stop.
