Water levels can be deceptive at Auldmuir Reservoir. What looks like a modest stretch of open water from the car park reveals itself as a proper spot once you get round the perimeter - good walking routes, decent bird-watching opportunities, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Scotland in the first place.

It's a straightforward reservoir, but that's rather the point. No theme park theatre, no admission charges, just a body of water in Renfrewshire that draws folk from across the Lowlands. The walking is manageable for most fitness levels, though you'll want proper boots if the ground's been wet. An hour to ninety minutes covers the main circuit comfortably. Birdwatchers get excited here - wildfowl are regular visitors, particularly in winter months.

Families with young children might find it a touch limited after the initial novelty of spotting ducks wears off, but teenagers and adults after a proper country walk will rate it. The views aren't dramatic by Highland standards, but there's something restorative about it.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands or The Pods at Auchenhean over in Ayrshire, Auldmuir makes an easy half-day excursion - roughly six miles away. It's the sort of place that fills a morning nicely without demanding much planning. Best visited when weather's decent; there's precious little shelter around the water's edge.
