Irvine Beach

The beach at Irvine stretches a decent mile or so along the North Ayrshire coast, and it's the kind of place that works best on a proper blue-sky day. Grey skies and you're wondering why you bothered. Sunny afternoon though, and it's genuinely pleasant - flat sandy stretches perfect for families to spread out, rock pools to potter about in at low tide, and enough shelter from the promenade if the wind picks up.

It's busy in summer, particularly July and August when Glaswegians descend for their week away. The tone shifts noticeably out of season - quieter, more contemplative, the sort of place you can actually think. The seafront has the usual suspect amenities: chip shops, ice cream vans, a few cafes. Nothing fancy, but you're not coming here for fine dining.

Walkers get more out of it than sun-worshippers. The coastal path extends beyond the main beach and the views toward Arran aren't half bad on a clear day. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with the promenade wander. Kids might tire after an hour of beach time, to be honest - it's functional rather than spectacular.

Staying nearby at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands means you're less than four miles away, making this an easy morning outing without the drive commitment. Free to access, obviously. Go when the weather's cooperating and you're after a straightforward seaside fix without the hype.
