Saltcoats Beach

The beach at Saltcoats stretches out flat and wide, backed by a proper working seaside town rather than gift shops and amusement arcades. You get sand, shingle, and that particular Scottish light that makes everything look sharper than it should. Low tide reveals acres of firm sand - decent for a long walk or for families who want space to let kids run about without tripping over beach umbrellas.

It's not dramatic. There's no clifftop drama, no hidden coves. What you're getting is straightforward seaside - the kind where locals walk dogs year-round and the Ayrshire accent gets thicker the further you venture into town. The promenade has that slightly faded charm of a place that's been popular since the 1950s and hasn't panicked about modernising.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands just down the road, this is genuinely worth the short walk. History buffs might venture to the Saltcoats town centre itself to check out the old kirk and harbour - there's actual substance there if you dig beyond the beach itself. For a proper beach day with buckets and spades, you'll want low tide and decent weather. Summer weekends pull the crowds; autumn and spring are quieter and, frankly, often more pleasant.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, longer if you're settling in with a book. It's unpretentious, which is rather refreshing.
