Aveline's Hole

Deep in the Mendip Hills, this natural limestone cave offers a proper underground adventure without the tourist crowds of nearby Cheddar Gorge. Aveline's Hole is actually an archaeological site of some significance - Stone Age remains were discovered here back in Victorian times, though you won't see much evidence of that today.

What you will find is a genuine cave experience that requires a torch and sensible shoes. The entrance is fairly obvious once you know where to look, just off the walking paths near Winscombe, but the interior stretches back into darkness. It's not massive, but there's enough depth to feel properly underground.

Families with adventurous children will love the exploration element, though very young ones might find it a bit spooky. Serious cavers will probably want something more challenging, but for most visitors it hits the sweet spot between accessible and authentic.

The cave sits well with a stay at one of the nearby parks like Cheddar Woods Resort or Wild Goose Glamping. You can easily combine it with walks across the Mendips or a trip to the bigger attractions at Cheddar Gorge. Allow an hour or so for the visit itself, plus walking time to reach it. Best avoided after heavy rain when the paths can get properly muddy.
