Dolebury Levvy (mine)

Scrambling through undergrowth on the Mendip Hills leads to one of Somerset's less celebrated cave systems. Dolebury Levvy isn't your typical tourist cave - there's no gift shop, no guided tours, just a proper wild cave experience that serious cavers and adventurous families seek out near Winscombe.

The entrance sits partway up Dolebury Warren, requiring a decent walk across National Trust land to reach. Once inside, you'll find natural limestone passages that demand headtorches and a willingness to get muddy. This is cave exploration in its rawest form.

Experienced cavers will appreciate the challenge, though beginners should think twice unless they're with someone who knows the system well. The passages can be tight and disorienting - not the place for a casual Sunday afternoon poke about with the kids.

Timing your visit for drier months makes sense, as wet weather can make conditions inside particularly unpleasant. Allow at least half a day if you're planning to explore properly, including the walk in and out.

Staying at nearby Cheddar Woods Resort gives you easy access to both this cave system and the famous Cheddar Gorge attractions. The Batch Campsite sits even closer if you want a more basic base for your Mendip adventures.
