Azalea Garden

The Azalea Garden near Hazlehead is a proper gem if you catch it at the right time of year. Late spring through early summer, when the azaleas are at peak bloom, the place transforms into a riot of colour - pinks, purples, reds, whites all competing for attention. It's quiet, which is the main thing. You won't battle crowds like you would at some garden attractions further south.

This is a straightforward horticultural space rather than a grand estate garden. You're looking at specimen plantings laid out for walking through and photographing, mostly. The paths are easy and well-maintained, so it works for families with younger kids, though teenagers might find it a bit slow unless they're into plants. Keen gardeners will spot some proper rare cultivars here.

Allow about an hour if you're moving at a leisurely pace. If you're just there to snap a few photos and move on, 30 minutes is fine. Go early morning for the best light and fewest people. Wet weather doesn't ruin it - actually enhances the colours.

If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park just up the road, this makes a decent afternoon activity to break up your park stay. It's close enough that you won't waste time driving, and if the weather turns dodgy, you've only lost 20 minutes rather than a full day. Not a standalone destination, but a solid add-on.
