Hazlehead Park

The woodland walks at Hazlehead Park roll on for miles through proper Aberdeen countryside, with locals treating it like their own backyard - which tells you something about how good it is. It's a walker's place, plain and simple. The terrain varies from easy strolls along wider tracks to steeper climbs if you're after a bit more graft. In autumn the colour is something special, and spring brings bluebells that make the whole forest floor look like it's been painted. Families with kids aged seven upwards will manage most routes without complaint, though younger ones might find the longer circuits a bit much.

The park sits just outside Hazlehead village, making it ideal if you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park a few miles south - a quick drive beats fighting for parking in Aberdeen city centre. There's space to breathe here, genuine quietness, and you'll spot red squirrels if you're lucky and patient. Bring waterproofs whatever the season; these Scottish woodlands get wet.

Free to wander, no entry fee, and no closing hours to worry about. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit, longer if you're stopping to actually look at things rather than just powering through.
