Heather Garden

The garden sits on the edge of Hazlehead, a proper sprawl of heather in full bloom that stops you dead. It's less manicured than you'd expect - more authentic moorland kept as a cultivated space, which is exactly the point. Walking through in late summer is extraordinary: the purple and pink spreads across what feels like actual countryside, not some tidy suburban plot.

You're looking at working examples of different heather varieties, which matters more than it sounds if you're into plants. Even if you're not, the sheer colour when it's flowering is worth the detour from Hazlehead proper. The paths are manageable, though muddy after rain - wear decent boots. It's not a place to spend three hours, more like 45 minutes to an hour, but that suits it. Families with young kids will find it interesting for about half that time before they get restless.

Free to access, which is decent of them. Best visited August through September when the heather's actually doing its thing; outside that window it's just moorland, which is pleasant enough but not the draw. If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy morning out before heading to bigger attractions. Works well alongside a Hazlehead park walk - you could do both in a morning without fatigue. Worth going if you're in the area and timing it right, but don't reroute your holiday specifically for it.
