Badby Wood

Walk into Badby Wood and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind where the canopy actually blocks out the sky and the path gets properly muddy underfoot. It's an ancient forest on the edge of Daventry, the sort of place that feels forgotten even though it's barely five minutes from town.

The wood itself is manageable for a half-day outing. There are walking trails threading through, nothing too taxing, and you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right. The trees are old enough to feel serious about things. It's not a manicured country estate walk - there's a wildness to it that appeals to families who want their kids actually tired out, and to anyone who just fancies standing among proper woodland without the National Trust admission fee.

Historically, this place has roots. The village of Badby nearby has medieval bones, and the wood itself has been here long enough to matter. You won't find visitor facilities or a café, so come prepared. Free access, as far as I can tell, though do check locally when you visit.

If you're staying at Whitefeather Campsite just down the road - less than a mile away - you've basically got a forest on your doorstep. Even from Hideaway Wood Farm or Magic Mushroom Cabin a few miles out, it's an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere. Worth combining with Daventry town itself for a proper day. The wood alone won't keep you occupied past lunchtime, but it's exactly the sort of place that makes a camping trip feel less touristy and more like you've actually landed somewhere real.
