Big Hill

The highest point in Warwickshire might not sound like much of a draw, but there's something satisfying about standing on Big Hill and knowing you've reached the top of the county. It's a modest summit near Daventry - you won't find dramatic vistas or Alpine grandeur here - but on a clear day the views across the Midlands roll out properly enough to justify the walk up.

What you get is a proper local's spot. Walkers love it because it's accessible without being trivial, and the surrounding countryside around Daventry has genuine appeal if you're the type who enjoys British rural landscapes rather than dramatic scenery. Kids will find the climb manageable, though they might ask "is this it?" once they reach the top - it's not a destination that'll hold their attention for hours.

The walk itself is the real point here. You're not paying entry fees or queuing; you just head out and do it, which is exactly how walking should work. Allow an hour or so for a comfortable ramble, less if you're moving briskly.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Hideaway Wood Farm or EWE Glamping are both within a few miles - Big Hill makes a decent morning outing before moving on to something with more obvious appeal. It's the sort of walk you do because you're in the area, not because you've planned a trip specifically around it. But that doesn't make it worthless. Sometimes the best walking isn't about the destination.
