Bainloch deer park

The deer here are remarkably unbothered by visitors, which is rather the point. Bainloch Deer Park sits just outside Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, and it's the sort of place where you can get genuinely close to red and fallow deer without the usual safari-park faffing about.

It's straightforward enough - a proper walk around enclosed parkland where the animals roam freely and you observe from marked paths. The deer are used to people but not tame, so there's something more satisfying about spotting them than at places where they've been fed into docility. You'll see stags with their antlers, does with fawns depending on season, and if you're lucky, the whole herd moving together across open ground.

This works well for families with children old enough to manage a decent walk without constant demands for ice cream - under-fives will probably get restless after half an hour. Walkers and anyone with an interest in wildlife will find it genuinely worthwhile. It's also excellent if you're after decent photographs without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions.

With several holiday parks within striking distance - Sandyhills Bay is practically on the doorstep, and Kippford options sit just a couple of miles off - you could easily slot this into a broader Dumfries and Galloway break. Allow an hour minimum, more if you're patient and the light is good.
