Balcomie Sands

The beach at Balcomie Sands stretches along the Fife coast just south of Anstruther, and it's the kind of place where you can actually breathe. Golden sand slopes gently into the North Sea, backed by low dunes and rough grassland that keeps the whole thing feeling properly unspoilt. At low tide, the expanse opens right up - perfect for a proper walk or letting the kids loose with a bucket.

It's not a lido beach with deckchairs and ice cream vans. There's a car park, a small café, and that's about it. You get families here, dog walkers, the odd determined paddler in summer, and folk who just want to sit and watch the water without fuss. The light changes constantly across the bay, and on a clear day you can see far enough along the coast to make it feel like your own discovery.

Walkers will find this a solid stopping point on routes around East Neuk - the path connections to other stretches of shore make it easy to string together a longer coastal walk. If you're staying at Sauchope Links Holiday Lodge just up the road, Balcomie is a ten-minute drive or a bracing thirty-minute walk across the fields. Admission is free, and there's no time limit - stay an hour or the whole afternoon. The wind can be fairly relentless in winter, but that's half the appeal. Come when the tide is out, bring a flask, and expect to stay longer than planned.
