Bamburgh Beach

The beach at Bamburgh is properly dramatic - a long golden stretch backed by dunes and dominated by the castle looming behind everything else. You get a real sense of scale here, especially at low tide when the sand opens up and you can walk for miles along the shore. The castle sits there like it owns the place, which technically it did for about a thousand years.

It's a working beach, not some manicured resort. Local families use it, dogs tear about, surfers show up when the swell's decent. The northern end tends quieter if crowds aren't your thing. Worth allowing at least two hours if you want to actually walk it properly - three if you're combining with a castle visit or a proper exploration of the dunes.

Families with kids will find plenty to do - rock pools, sand, that castle view to aim at. Walkers get genuine coastal scenery without the chocolate-box cuteness that can feel a bit exhausting. History types obviously want to spend time at the castle itself, but the beach gives you the full context of why this location mattered so much.

Access is straightforward from Bamburgh village. Parking's available and it's free. The weather can turn quickly - I've seen it go from cracking to properly grim in minutes - so come prepared. If you're staying at Bamburgh Under Canvas or any of the other parks dotted within a couple of miles, this is an obvious choice for a morning or afternoon, but it's worth more than just a quick visit.
