Basking Howe

The Bronze Age barrow sits on open moorland a few miles inland from Scarborough, and honestly, it's the sort of place you'll only find if you're properly interested in prehistory. Basking Howe is a burial mound - a howe, as they call them up here - and what you're looking at is roughly 4,000 years of human history compressed into a grassy lump on the landscape.

It's not dramatic. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the mound itself and the views across North Yorkshire moorland. You'll need to know roughly where you're going because signage is minimal. The appeal is almost entirely for archaeology enthusiasts or anyone who finds early Bronze Age burial practices genuinely fascinating. Families with young children will probably get bored after five minutes - there's no play value here, and the walk to reach it can be muddy depending on the season.

Allow about an hour if you're making a proper trip of it, including the walk and a bit of standing around trying to imagine what ceremonies happened here millennia ago. The nearest town is Scarborough, which is workable if you're camping at one of the local sites - Prospect House Farm Glamping or Vale of Pickering Caravan Park are both within reasonable distance. You could pair this with a walk across the moors rather than make it your main event. Free to visit, naturally, since there's nothing there to charge for. Best in late spring or early autumn when the moorland isn't waterlogged.
