Ayton Castle

The ruins of Ayton Castle rise from the landscape between Scarborough and the inland villages of North Yorkshire, a reminder of medieval border tensions that feel oddly distant when you're standing in the quiet countryside. What remains is largely the keep - a sturdy stone tower that once commanded this stretch of land. It's not a grand affair. There's no grand hall to wander through, no pristine battlements for photographs. The castle itself is free to visit and you can walk around the exterior without restriction, though access inside the keep depends on current condition and permissions. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour if you're the type who reads everything; less if you just fancy a quick look and a wander through the surrounding fields.

It's the kind of spot that appeals to people who like their history unsanitised - no gift shop, no interpretation boards (as far as I could tell), just stone and sky. Families with younger children might find it underwhelming unless they're genuinely into castles. Walkers heading between Scarborough and the North York Moors will find it worth a brief detour. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts at Cayton Bay is closest at under five miles - it's a decent rainy-day option or a leg-stretcher between seaside time and camping.

Go when the light's decent and the fields aren't waterlogged. You'll get far more from standing around it than you might expect.
