Bassingham Covert

The woodland at Bassingham Covert sits about four miles south of Lincoln, and it's the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - which makes it all the better. It's a proper working forest, not a manicured nature reserve, with mature trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet you actually get when you're away from the main roads.

Walkers will find the most to like here. There's nothing dramatic about it - no waterfalls, no viewpoints, no Instagram moments - but that's precisely why it works. You can wander for an hour or three depending on which routes you take, and it never feels crowded. The woodland floor changes through the seasons, and in spring the bluebells are genuine rather than staged. Families with older kids will get on fine; younger ones might lose interest after 40 minutes unless they're the type who enjoy spotting birds and insects.

It's free to access, naturally. Bring proper footwear if it's been wet - it can get boggy in places. The nearest car parks are modest, so go early on weekends if you want to avoid faffing about.

If you're based at Spire View Meadow or Wigwam Holidays Orchard Stables - both excellent glamping spots near Lincoln - Bassingham Covert makes a solid morning walk without needing to pack a full day trip. It slots nicely between accommodation and exploring Lincoln itself, which is only twenty minutes away. Not essential, but genuinely worth the detour if you enjoy woodland without the crowds.
