Willson's Gorse

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist trap, Willson's Gorse sits just outside Lincoln and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Lincolnshire forest - quiet paths, open glades, and the kind of peace you rarely find near a city. The woodland itself is mixed deciduous, with patches of gorse that give the place its name, particularly striking in spring when the yellow flowers are out. You're looking at easy, well-trodden trails suitable for families with younger kids, though the paths can get muddy after rain so decent footwear matters.

This works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Spire View Meadow is barely a mile and a half away, making it an ideal leg-stretch before breakfast. Wagtail Country Park, a few miles further out, pairs nicely with it if you're doing a full day outdoors. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're not rushing. Wildlife watchers will spot woodland birds year-round; autumn is particularly good for fungi if you know what you're looking at.

The forest isn't dramatic or showy. It won't wow you with views or rare plants. But it's free, it's close to Lincoln's castle and cathedral if you need culture afterwards, and it's the kind of place where you actually feel like you've walked somewhere rather than ticked a box.
