Battery Hill

The walk up Battery Hill rewards you with a proper panoramic view across Oban Bay and out towards the islands. It's a relatively short, steep climb from the outskirts of Oban itself - nothing too demanding, but enough to get the legs working and the lungs pumping.

Once you've made it to the top, you understand why this spot mattered enough to fortify. The vista sweeps across the water to Kerrera and beyond, with the town spread below like a postcard. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. On a grey one - which is more often the case in these parts - it's still atmospheric, even moody.

This is walkers' territory, really. Families with young kids might find the gradient a bit much, though teenagers who can manage a decent incline will get something out of it. History enthusiasts will appreciate the defensive positioning, though there's not much remaining infrastructure to pore over. Expect to spend an hour return trip including a breather at the summit.

It sits handily close to several holiday parks dotting the Oban area. Tanunda Pods and Maggie's Cabin are practically on your doorstep if you're based nearby, while Oban Holiday Park itself is only 2.6 miles away. Works perfectly as a morning walk before breakfast or an evening stroll when you've had enough of the campervan. Free to access, naturally - just turn up and walk.
