Lochan Dubh

Dark waters reflect the surrounding hills at this small loch tucked away in the Argyll countryside. Lochan Dubh - which means 'black loch' in Gaelic - lives up to its name with deep, peaty waters that shimmer almost black in certain light. The walk to reach it is gentle enough for most visitors, though proper walking boots are essential given the often boggy terrain.

Families with older children will appreciate the peaceful setting, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven path. The loch itself is relatively small - you can walk its perimeter in about twenty minutes - but the surrounding landscape more than makes up for it. Hills rise on all sides, creating a proper sense of seclusion despite being reasonably close to Oban.

Photography enthusiasts will find plenty to work with, particularly in early morning when mist often clings to the water's surface. The silence here is quite something - just the occasional bird call and gentle lapping of water against the shore. It's free to visit, naturally, and there are no facilities whatsoever, so come prepared.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Oban - Tanunda Pods or North Ledaig Caravan Park are closest - this makes a lovely half-day excursion. Allow two to three hours including the walk there and back.
