Walking into Battle Great Woods feels like stepping back in time - not because of plaques or visitor centres, but because the trees themselves seem properly ancient. This nature reserve sits right on Battle's doorstep and delivers exactly what you'd hope for: mature woodland with decent paths, plenty of space to stretch your legs, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the city.

It's woodland rather than spectacle. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or Instagram moments here, just good honest trees - oak, beech, the lot - and enough footpaths to keep you wandering for a couple of hours without repeating yourself. History enthusiasts might find it interesting that you're walking through the same landscape that witnessed the 1066 Battle of Hastings settlement, though the woods themselves aren't marked up with explanations.
