About English Heritage - 1066 Battle of Hastings

The battlefield itself is the real draw here, not four walls and a gift shop. You're standing on the actual ground where William the Conqueror defeated Harold Godwinson in 1066, which rather changes how you feel about a sloped field in Sussex. The visitor centre explains the run-up to the invasion and walks you through what happened that October day, but honestly, the best bit is walking the battlefield itself and working out the tactics.

It works brilliantly for history types and school groups - kids can actually picture archers lining up on the ridge, cavalry charges across the valley. You need a decent couple of hours to do it properly: museum first to get your head straight, then at least an hour on the ground. The walk isn't brutal but it's undulating, so bring proper shoes.

Battle itself is a small, proper little market town five minutes away, which is handy for lunch and stretching your legs between attractions. There's plenty of accommodation nearby - Crowhurst Park is only 2 miles off if you're basing yourself for a longer Sussex trip, with Beech Estate Campsite even closer. The site isn't free (admission charged), so budget accordingly.

Worth it? Absolutely, if 1066 means something to you. If medieval history leaves you cold, you'll be bored within forty minutes. But if you want to understand how England became Norman, you have to come here. The view from the top of the ridge alone justifies the visit.
