The Battle of Shrewsbury took place here in 1403, and if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Beaconsfield is practically on your doorstep - it's worth a morning's walk to stand where Henry IV's forces faced off against the Percy rebels. There's not much to see in terms of visitor facilities or interpretation boards, mind you. This is a genuine working landscape, not a heritage site wrapped up with a visitor centre and gift shop.

The topography tells the story better than any plaque could - the slope, the drainage patterns, the sight lines. Honestly? It works best as part of a broader Shrewsbury trip - combine it with the castle and the town centre's half-timbered streets, then retreat to one of the nearby parks for the evening. On its own, it's atmospheric rather than gripping. History fans will find it rewarding. Casual walkers might feel a bit let down by the lack of infrastructure.
