Beacon Hill

You can see Beacon Hill from miles away across the Lincolnshire flatlands - a proper lump of high ground that barely cracks 400 feet but feels like climbing Everest when you're surrounded by fen and field. The walk up from Louth takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace and mood, winding through farmland that doesn't offer much shelter when the wind picks up. Once you're there, the views justify the slog. On a clear day you can see right across the Wolds towards the coast, and on murky afternoons it's easy enough to pretend you're overlooking something more dramatic than Lincolnshire. The summit itself is windswept and exposed - there's an old beacon point marked out, though little remains of the original structure. It's free to visit and you can tackle it any time of year, though summer is obviously warmer and the paths less treacherous. Families with capable walkers will manage it fine in an afternoon, though younger legs might find it tedious given how long the approach is relative to the actual height gain. If you're camping nearby - and there's no shortage of options, with Witham Grange and Secret Garden Glamping both within 5 miles - it's a solid half-day activity to break up the holiday. Worth doing once, particularly if the weather's on your side.
