Beacon Wood

The woodland around Beacon Wood, just outside Canterbury, is proper walking territory. Ancient trees, clear paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near the city centre - it's worth the short drive from town. You're looking at a few hours maximum for a decent circuit, though there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting rather than just trudging the same loop.

Families with older kids will enjoy it more than toddlers. The paths are manageable but uneven in places, and there's real forest floor rather than manicured park surfaces. Dogs love it here, which matters if you're staying at Nethergong Camping or Dog & Duck Leisure Park nearby - both are close enough for an easy morning outing. Canterbury Lodges and Glamping, sitting 4.8 miles away, makes a reasonable base too if you're after something cushier than standard camping.

It's free to wander, which is the main appeal. No visitor centre, no facilities that we could find, so come prepared with water and snacks. Best visited autumn through spring when the ground isn't churned to mud and the tree cover still feels substantial without being oppressive. Summer can be a bit muggy under all that canopy.

Realistically, Beacon Wood works as a break between Canterbury's attractions rather than a destination in itself. It's good for burning energy if you've been cathedral-spotting all morning. Worth the stop if you're already in the area, but don't make a special trip from further afield.
