Reculver Towers and Roman Fort

Two chalk towers rise abruptly from the shingle beach near Herne Bay, all that remains of a 12th-century church that once stood sentinel over a Roman fort. Walking out along the Kent coastline, you'll spot them from miles away - gaunt, theatrical things that look more like ruins from a Gothic novel than actual historical remains.

The twin towers themselves are the draw here. You can't go inside them anymore, but getting close enough to see the flint and stone work, the narrow window openings, the sheer scale of the medieval engineering - that's worth the trek. The site sits right on the beach, so depending on the tide, you're either walking on sand or negotiating shingle. Either way, it's a proper coastal walk from the car park, probably twenty minutes on foot.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it. There's a Roman fort buried beneath your feet - Regulbium, it was called - and the medieval church exploited that Roman foundation stone quite literally. But if you're after an interactive experience or anything interpretive, you'll be disappointed. It's just the towers and the beach and your own imagination filling in the gaps.

This works best as part of a broader coastal ramble between Herne Bay and Whitstable rather than a standalone visit. Combine it with a holiday park base like Seaview near Whitstable or Glamping at Preston Court, and you've got a proper day of seaside exploration. Autumn and winter are best - summer weekends get rammed with day-trippers. Allow an hour to take photos and sit with a coffee in the salt wind.
