Beaghmore Stone Circle D

The stones stand in the middle of nothing much - seven circles arranged across boggy ground near Cookstown, waiting for you to work out what they meant. Beaghmore is properly remote, the sort of place where you crunch across heather and wonder why Bronze Age people bothered dragging rocks out here at all.

You get the circles themselves, plus cairns and alignments that archaeologists are still arguing about. No visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you and the mystery. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on your temperament. Walkers will find it worth the detour - the landscape is stark and beautiful in that bleak Mid Ulster way, and the site sits well within reach of bigger attractions across the region.

It's completely free and there are no set hours, which means you can turn up whenever and wander about undisturbed. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you just want photos. The ground gets boggy after rain, so decent boots help. If you're staying at Sperrinview Glamping just down the road, this makes an obvious morning walk - close enough not to require a huge drive, far enough away to feel like proper exploring.

Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming without context, but anyone interested in archaeology or Bronze Age Ireland will appreciate standing in front of something genuinely old and genuinely unexplained. No crowds, no fuss. Just stones and questions.
