Beauly Priory

The roofless shell of Beauly Priory dominates the small town of Beauly like a stone ghost. What remains are the exquisite Gothic arches and walls of a monastery founded in 1230 by French monks - enough to give you a genuine sense of what this place once was, without needing much imagination to fill in the blanks.

Walking around the ruins takes perhaps thirty minutes, longer if you're the type to sit on the grass and properly absorb the atmosphere. The carved stonework is genuinely impressive, particularly the rose window and the delicate tracery that survives on the eastern wall. You can see where the monks once moved between cloisters, where they slept, where they prayed.

It's free to wander around, and there's a small interpretive board near the entrance that explains what you're looking at. History enthusiasts will find this worthwhile; others might manage an hour at best before moving on to something with a roof.

Beauly itself is a modest Highland town, so the priory works best as part of a broader exploration of the area rather than a standalone destination. If you're staying at Beauly Holiday Park - just over a mile away - it's an easy stroll into town and well worth including in a morning walk. The nearby Bunchrew Caravan Park and Highland Premier Glamping Pods are also within striking distance for a casual visit. On a grey Scottish afternoon, when the light catches those old stones just right, it's genuinely moving.
