School Lochan

A small loch tucked away near Beauly that most visitors to the Highlands completely miss. School Lochan is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident while exploring the back roads, and that's genuinely its appeal - it hasn't been packaged up or over-explained.

The water is dark and still, ringed by conifers and rough grassland. There's not much to 'do' here in the activity sense. No cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards telling you what you're looking at. You come to be quiet, take photographs if the light's decent, maybe spot a heron if you're patient. On a clear day the reflections are proper striking.

It works best for photographers and walkers who want a five-minute detour rather than a destination in itself. If you're camping at Beauly Holiday Park or Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site, it's close enough to warrant a morning drive, especially if you're exploring the quieter corners of the Black Isle and the Beauly area. The road access is straightforward from Beauly itself.

Realistic time here? Thirty minutes to an hour, tops. Unless you're the sort who can sit by water for ages watching light change, in which case you'll linger longer. Not one for kids who need constant entertainment, but families who enjoy gentle exploring will find it peaceful. Best visited in early morning or late afternoon when the loch is calm and the midges are less aggressive. Free, naturally - it's just a loch.
