Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest

The drive through Bedgebury feels like entering someone's private woodland estate, except the 9,000 trees here belong to all of us. This working pinetum and forest spans over 300 acres near Cranbrook, and it's essentially a living library of conifers from across the globe - Californian giant sequoias standing alongside Japanese larches and Himalayan cedars. You wander through marked trails that take between 45 minutes and three hours depending on your mood and leg strength. The whole thing works brilliantly if you're camping at Glassenbury or Hopgarden nearby and need a proper walk that isn't just "round the perimeter of a holiday park". Families with primary school kids do well here - there's actual forest to explore rather than theme park theatre, and spotting the different tree species becomes a game. Spring's cracking for the colour; autumn when the larches turn gold is genuinely worth timing a trip around. It's free to wander, though there's a car park charge if you're not staying at one of the local camps. Bring decent boots because the forest floor gets boggy in places, especially after rain. History buffs might find the WWII connections interesting - the site was used by the RAF during the war. The real value here is time and space. You're not rushing between attractions.
