Beinn Bhuidhe

The walk up Beinn Bhuidhe isn't particularly long or technical, which is precisely why it gets hammered on weekends. From Newtonmore, you're looking at a straightforward ascent to around 900 metres, with decent views over the Monadhliath Mountains once you've put in the graft. The real appeal is accessibility - it's genuinely doable for fit family groups, not just fell-runners and serious hikers.

The summit itself isn't dramatic. You won't find the jawdrop payoff of bigger peaks, but on a clear day you get sweeping views across the Highlands that make the effort worthwhile. The terrain is moorland bog in places, so proper boots matter. Allow a good four hours there and back, longer if you're stopping for photos or eating sandwiches at the top.

This works brilliantly as a base for a park holiday around Newtonmore. Glenshiel Campsite sits just under two miles away with genuinely solid reviews, making it easy to base yourself there for a few days of walking. Invernahavon Caravan Park pushes it to five and a half miles but lands higher marks if you want slightly more space. Either works as a jumping-off point for this walk plus other Monadhliath exploration.

Who gets the most from it? Families after a proper hill experience without committing to something Alpine. Walkers wanting a solid afternoon's leg work. History types won't find much here - it's pure landscape and fresh air. Winter ascents are possible but demand care.
