About Beinn Donn

The walk up Beinn Donn from Appin is a proper hill rather than a stroll, but it's nothing that will have you cursing by the top. The peak sits just inland from the Argyll coast, and what makes it worthwhile is the view once you've climbed to 1,027 metres - you're looking out over Loch Linnhe, the islands beyond, and on a clear day the whole sweep of the Highlands spreads out like someone's rolled out a map just for you.

This one's for walkers with a bit of leg strength and decent boots. It's not a technical climb, just relentless uphill through moorland and heather, and it takes most people between four and five hours for the round trip. The route isn't particularly well-marked, so bring a map or download the Munros app - it's easy to drift off the main path when you're scanning the view.

You won't find a visitor centre or facilities on the mountain itself. It's free to walk, naturally, and there's a car park near the start of the route. The weather can turn quickly, so don't rely on what the forecast said at breakfast time.

If you're based at Creagan Station Tourers just down the road - it's barely a couple of miles away - Beinn Donn pairs well with time on the coast or a potter around Appin village. Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site is slightly further but gives you access to wider exploration. Go in late spring or early autumn when the midges aren't quite so ambitious.
