Beinn Odhar

The walk up Beinn Odhar from Callander is straightforward and rewarding - nothing technical, just a proper hill slog that takes about two hours to the summit. You're looking at roughly 2,500 feet of climbing, which sounds more daunting than it actually is because the gradient stays fairly gentle throughout.

On a clear day, the view sweeps across the Trossachs toward Ben Ledi and the wider Stirling landscape. It's the sort of vantage point that makes you understand why this corner of the Lowlands matters - you see how the terrain suddenly changes, how the valleys carve through the hills. On a murky Scottish afternoon (and there will be plenty of those), you'll be climbing into cloud cover within an hour, which is annoying but doesn't ruin the experience.

This is walkers' territory, plain and simple. Families with confident kids will manage it fine. Anyone after a quick stroll or a dramatic rock scramble should look elsewhere. The path is well-trodden but can be boggy lower down, particularly on the eastern side - waterproof boots aren't negotiable.

Based near Callander at either Keltie Bridge Caravan Park or Callander Woods, you could easily combine this with the Trossachs loop or Ben Ledi as part of a week's hiking. It's free to walk, naturally, and works as a half-day adventure or a full morning depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.
