Bell Wood

Walk into Bell Wood near Rochester and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind with tall oaks, a stream running through it, and enough moss-covered logs to remind you why people love Kent's forests. There's no visitor centre, no entrance fee, no faffing about. You just turn up and walk.

It's a working forest, which means the paths are clear and well-trodden but never feel manicured. The stream is the main draw - kids will be fascinated by it, adults might actually stop checking their phones. The canopy's thick enough that even on warm days it stays cool and damp underfoot.

Walkers get the most out of Bell Wood. It's not a destination in itself - you're not coming here for a singular "view" or moment. Instead, it's the kind of place where an hour disappears because you're following the water, noticing ferns, listening to birds. Family groups with primary-school-aged children will do well here; toddlers might find the terrain a bit much depending on the weather.

There's no cafe, no facilities that I could find. Come prepared with water. The light's best in late morning before the woods get proper shaded. It works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher if you're staying at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park just down the road - maybe not your whole day, but the kind of morning walk that makes a week in Kent feel properly spent.
