Northward Hill Woodland Viewpoint

The walk up to Northward Hill takes you through proper woodland, the kind where the light filters green through the canopy and you're genuinely glad you wore decent shoes. Once you clear the trees, the view opens up across the Thames estuary - it's the sort of landscape that explains why people stay in Kent rather than heading south to the coast. You can see for miles when the weather cooperates, and on a clear day the industrial sprawl of the oil refineries actually looks rather dramatic in the distance.

It's best suited to walkers and photographers. Families with young kids will manage the climb, though expect complaints if they're not the outdoorsy type. The whole experience takes about an hour if you're not hanging about, though many people find themselves lingering longer than planned once they reach the top.

There's no admission charge - it's a proper public access spot. Spring and early autumn work best, when you're not battling either midge clouds or muddy paths. Winter gives you better visibility across the water, mind you.

If you're basing yourself at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park or Thamesview Camping, this makes a solid half-day excursion. It's close enough to Rochester that you could combine it with a poke around the cathedral and High Street without feeling rushed. The viewpoint itself doesn't take long, but the woodland walk is the real draw here - less about a destination, more about the walk itself.
