Ben Nevis

Britain's highest mountain sits right there, dominating the Highland landscape above Kinlochleven like nothing else matters. Ben Nevis isn't just a peak - it's a proper mountain experience, and depending on your fitness level and ambitions, that could mean anything from a stroll through the lower glen to a full day's climb up the main tourist path to the 1,345-metre summit.

The mountain itself is free to access, which is the best bit. Most visitors tackle the well-worn path from Glen Nevis Visitor Centre, which takes around four to five hours return. It's steep, can be boggy, and the weather changes on a whim - I've seen brilliant sunshine at the base turn into cloud thick enough that you can't see your own boots. The summit views, when you get them, stretch across the Highlands for miles. Other days you're standing in a grey soup wondering why you bothered. That's mountain weather for you.

This is proper hiking territory, not a casual family stroll. Older kids who enjoy being outdoors will get something from it, but under-tens will likely hit a wall halfway up. Better for serious walkers, fell runners, and anyone who wants to say they've climbed the UK's highest peak.

Stay at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park just 2.7 miles away - your tent's practically in the mountain's shadow. Highland Glen Holiday Park, 15 miles further out near Spean Bridge, offers a less intense base if you want easier access to the wider region. Allow a full day if you're attempting the summit. Go early, check the forecast, and pack proper kit. The mountain doesn't care how keen you are.
