Sgor an Iubhair

The walk up Sgor an Iubhair isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind you why you're not as fit as you thought. This peak sits right above Kinlochleven in the Highlands, making it an ideal afternoon outing if you're camping or glamping in the area - Blackwater Hostel is barely two miles away if you fancy a proper basecamp.

You're looking at about 45 minutes to an hour to bag the summit, depending on how much scrambling slows you down. The views back towards Glen Nevis are genuinely decent: when the weather plays along, you can see proper distance across the mountains. On a grey day it's a bit underwhelming, so timing matters.

This works well for walkers who want something more than a stroll but aren't ready for the big Munro commitments. Families with older kids will manage it fine - the scramble at the top is straightforward enough. Anyone with dodgy knees should think twice about the descent though; it's relentless on the way down.

It's free, obviously. Start early if you're visiting in summer - the path gets busier as the day goes on, and afternoon cloud can roll in without warning. If you're staying at Glen Nevis or Invercoe caravan parks, you're well positioned to string together a few peaks in the area. Solo walkers use this as a warm-up before tackling the bigger routes that branch off through the Glen Nevis valley.
