Kinlochleven

The aluminium smelter may have closed decades ago, but its legacy lives on in this former industrial village turned outdoor adventure hub. Kinlochleven sits at the head of Loch Leven, surrounded by some of Scotland's most dramatic mountain terrain - and yes, it's definitely in Scotland, not England despite what the postcode suggests.

This compact Highland settlement feels worlds away from typical tourist trails. The old industrial architecture gives it a grittier edge than your average Highland village, but that's part of its appeal. It's become a proper magnet for walkers and climbers, especially those tackling the West Highland Way, which passes right through the village centre.

Ben Nevis dominates the northern horizon, while peaks like Stob Bàn and Am Bodach tower on either side of the glen. The walking here is spectacular but serious - these aren't gentle Sunday strolls. For something more cultural, the Pelton Wheel gallery showcases local art in what was once part of the aluminium works.

Getting here requires commitment. Fort William is your nearest proper town, about 20 minutes by car along the winding lochside road. Public transport is limited, so having your own wheels makes sense.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks puts you right in the heart of this walking paradise. Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park and Ben Nevis Holiday Park both offer excellent access to the mountains, while Invercoe Caravan & Motorhome Park sits beautifully beside Loch Leven itself. After a day on the hills, there's something deeply satisfying about returning to your pitch with those towering peaks all around you.
