Bergum Wood

Walk into Bergum Wood and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is - proper woodland, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a decent-sized patch of old growth forest just outside Shrewsbury, with a network of paths threading through beech and oak that feel genuinely peaceful without being remote or difficult to navigate.

The wood works best for a solid couple of hours of rambling, especially if you're the type who enjoys spotting birds and identifying trees without needing much else happening. Kids might find it pleasant for half an hour, but they'll probably want a destination at the end - a waterfall, a viewpoint, something. Here it's really just the walk itself.

You won't find information boards or facilities to speak of, which is either refreshing or disappointing depending on your view. It's the kind of place you turn up to and wander, no admission charges or opening hours to worry about. Bring decent boots if it's been wet - the ground gets muddy.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Sunrise Pods or Brow Farm are closest - it's an easy morning or afternoon addition to your trip. Pair it with a visit to Shrewsbury itself for the medieval streets and the castle, and you've got a proper day. The wood isn't remarkable enough to travel an hour for on its own, but as part of a Shropshire ramble it fills a gap nicely.
