Berriew Aquaduct Car Park

The car park at Berriew Aqueduct sits right at the edge of something genuinely impressive - Thomas Telford's 1821 structure that carries the Montgomery Canal across the River Severn. It's a working piece of Victorian engineering, and from the car park you get a proper look at the scale of it without any faffing about.

What you're actually doing here is stopping for a moment during a walk or drive through Powys. The aqueduct itself spans 600 feet and is best appreciated from below, where you can see the iron trough and the stonework that's still holding water after two centuries. It's a twenty-minute wander from the car park if you're keen, or a five-minute stroll if you just want photos.

This works brilliantly as a break in a canal-side walk - the towpath runs both directions - or as a quick detour from Welshpool, which is only a short drive away. History types and canal enthusiasts will spend proper time here; families with young kids might find it a bit industrial and underwhelming unless they're already into that sort of thing. The car park itself is free and unsignposted, which adds to its low-key charm.
