Whirly pool

The River Severn does something rather odd just outside Welshpool - it spins. Whirlpool is a natural phenomenon where the water twists back on itself, creating a proper vortex that's visible from the riverbank. It's not dramatic or thunderous; more like watching a giant sink drain in slow motion. The whole thing depends on water levels and flow, so sometimes it's obvious, sometimes it's barely there. Worth stopping for if you're passing through, less so if you're making a special trip.

Visitors tend to be walkers and nature spotters rather than families after a theme park experience. You'll stand on the bank, watch the water swirl for five minutes, maybe take a photo, then carry on. There's something hypnotic about it though - the kind of thing that catches you off guard because you weren't expecting anything out here to be quite so peculiar. The surrounding countryside is lovely for a stroll, with decent views across the valley toward the Welsh hills.

It's free and accessible, though you'll need to find the right bit of riverbank - not signposted as such. Allow fifteen minutes, half an hour if you're the contemplative type. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Maes Yr Afon is closest at less than two miles - it's an easy diversion on a morning walk. Combine it with a proper mooch around Welshpool town centre or a longer ramble along the Severn Valley. Not a destination in itself, but a decent little detour that adds texture to a Mid Wales break.
