Birch Coppice

A proper woodland walk through Birch Coppice, just outside Hereford, is exactly what you need if the kids are climbing the walls or you've had enough of manicured attractions. It's a working coppice woodland - the kind of place where you can actually see how these forests are managed rather than just wander through trees looking at your phone.

The woodland itself is open and airy in places, denser in others, with a good mix of birch and hazel that makes for pleasant walking without feeling like you're trudging through dense jungle. There are paths through it, though nothing particularly signposted or groomed - you'll want to have your wits about you if you're visiting with younger children who might wander. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how thorough you want to be.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Pearl Lake, Townsend, or Arrow Bank are all within a few miles - and you want to stretch your legs without heading into Hereford proper. You won't get that Instagram moment here, and there's no café or facilities, but that's rather the point. Walkers and nature types will get more from it than families after a quick afternoon outing. Best visited when it's not waterlogged, so spring or summer are your safest bets. Free to access, naturally - it's just woodland.
