Wapley Hillfort

The earthworks at Wapley are what you come for - a proper Iron Age hillfort with ramparts that still command the landscape above Hereford. It's the kind of place where you stand on the ridge and feel the strategic thinking of people who occupied this spot nearly 2,500 years ago. The fort itself is modest by the standards of some, but the views across the Herefordshire countryside are genuine.

Walking the perimeter takes maybe 45 minutes, depending on how long you linger. The ramparts are still distinct enough to read the layout, and the interior opens out to grazing land. It's free to visit - you just pitch up and explore. There's no interpretation on-site, so it helps to have done a bit of homework beforehand, or bring a good guidebook.

This is a walker's visit rather than a family afternoon out. History types will get more from it than, say, a five-year-old. You'll want proper boots - the ground can be waterlogged, and there's nothing to soften a muddy scramble. Good time to go is late spring through early autumn, when the fields aren't too heavy underfoot.

Stay at one of the caravan parks nearby - Pearl Lake is closest at under three miles away - and you could easily combine Wapley with other walks in the area. It's not a day-long attraction, but it sits well within a broader countryside itinerary around Hereford.
