Birch Hill

The highest point in Bracknell Forest sits at Birch Hill, a modest 227 metres that feels more significant when you're actually standing on it. From the summit, you get proper views across the Thames Valley - on a clear day you can pick out the Chilterns in the distance, which makes the climb worthwhile even if the peak itself is low-key.

It's an easy walk from the surrounding woodland, making it ideal for families with younger legs or anyone after a gentle couple of hours in the trees. Walkers based near Chertsey will find it accessible enough as a morning outing before heading to the caravan parks scattered around the area - Chertsey Caravan Park is just 3.9 miles away, and several others sit within a five-mile radius. The woodland around Birch Hill is pleasant enough, though it's not dramatically dramatic: oaks and birches as you'd expect, and enough space to breathe.

There's no visitor facility to speak of - no café, no visitor centre, no admission charge. Essentially you park nearby and walk. Allow an hour or so if you're not rushing, longer if you fancy exploring the wider forest paths. Best visited on a day when the visibility's decent; there's not much point climbing in thick cloud, though I've done it. The peak itself can be a bit muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters. It's honest countryside rather than spectacular, but if you're based in the area for a caravan holiday, it's well worth the detour for a leg-stretch and a moment of genuine elevation.
