Birch Hill

Getting to the top takes a proper slog through woodland that's muddy even in summer, but the panoramic views across the Teme Valley make it worthwhile. This 357-metre peak sits just outside Tenbury Wells and offers one of the best vantage points in this corner of Shropshire.

You'll need decent boots and about an hour each way from the nearest parking spot. The footpaths aren't always clearly marked, so download an OS map to your phone before setting off. Kids under ten might struggle with the steeper sections, though teenagers who enjoy a challenge will love claiming they've conquered a proper Shropshire peak.

What makes Birch Hill special isn't just the height - it's the 360-degree views once you break through the treeline. On clear days you can spot the Malvern Hills to the south and the Welsh borders stretching west. Early morning visits reward you with misty valleys and the chance of spotting deer.

For families staying at one of the holiday parks around Tenbury Wells like Lodge Coppice or Hidden Valley Camping, this makes an excellent half-day adventure. Pack a proper picnic for the summit - there's nowhere to buy refreshments up there, and you'll want to linger at the top after that climb.
